Destringing vars and changing commas to dots

Hi all

I have some datasets in which Italian notation has been used - this means that commas have been used instead of dots and vice versa.
Stata recognizes these variables as strings. I would like to destring these variables and change commas to dots (and dots to commas) with a unique command. Is it possible?
