Why GEE is marginal model and GLMM is conditional model?

Hi,
I‘m a beginner of GEE and GLMM. In recent day, I read some books and materials about GEE. In this book, they regarded GEE as marginal model. I’m struggling about this: why GEE could be called "marginal model"? Could somebody help me for this? Thanks very much!
